Today I had the opportunity to participate in Proini Epitheorisi with Katerina Iliadi on Radio tou Politi, where we analyzed the latest international developments and the broader strategic significance of the India–European Union trade agreement.
This agreement is already being described as “the mother of all deals” — not only because of its immense economic scale, but primarily because of the geopolitical context in which it is being negotiated. At a time when international law is increasingly contested, global supply chains are being restructured, and traditional alliances are under pressure, the European Union is seeking to strengthen its strategic autonomy and diversify its partnerships. India, as a rising global power with significant demographic, economic, and technological potential, emerges as a key strategic partner in this evolving landscape.
During the discussion, I stressed that for small states such as Cyprus, participation in strong and cohesive European and international frameworks is not optional. It is a fundamental condition for ensuring security, economic resilience, and political relevance. Large-scale international agreements shape the global environment within which we operate — from trade flows and energy security to geopolitical alignments and regulatory standards.
At the same time, I underlined the importance of proactive engagement within the European Union to safeguard national interests. While the broader strategic benefits of such agreements may be substantial, individual sectors of the economy may face adjustment pressures. It is therefore the responsibility of governments to anticipate potential impacts, negotiate protective mechanisms where necessary, and support affected industries and workers through targeted policies.
The evolving global order demands clarity of strategy, informed public dialogue, and institutional preparedness. International developments are not remote events unfolding elsewhere; they directly influence our economic prospects, our diplomatic positioning, and our national security. In this environment, political leadership must be guided by seriousness, expertise, and a strong sense of responsibility.
