Ekloges2026 – The Impact of the MERCOSUR Agreement

Jan 28, 2026 | SM

With strong positions and substantive political debate, the political program Ekloges2026, hosted by Haris Therapis, continued by placing one of the most controversial European issues of the period at the center of discussion: the MERCOSUR agreement.

Guests on the program were Giannakis Gavriel, MP for Famagusta with AKEL and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, and candidate for the May 2025 parliamentary elections; Androula Kaminara, parliamentary candidate with ALMA; and Alexia Sakadaki, parliamentary candidate with the Ecologists’ Movement.

🌍 MERCOSUR: Opportunity or Threat?
The core of the discussion focused on the MERCOSUR agreement, which has divided opinion across Europe and sparked strong reactions within the agricultural sector. The guests approached the issue from different perspectives, analyzing whether the agreement represents an opportunity or a serious threat to Cyprus’ primary sector.

🔥 Tension, Disagreements — and a Shared Concern
The debate was intense, with clear differences in political positions. However, all three agreed on one crucial point: the executive branch appears absent and inactive, lacking a coherent and organized strategy to ensure that the agreement is implemented in a way that benefits Cyprus.

🌱 Agricultural Development, Environment, and Food Security
The discussion moved beyond theory. The guests were asked to state clearly what actions they would take if elected and what long-term goals they set for Cyprus’ agricultural development. Environmental consequences, unfair competition, and potential risks to the food supply chain — including imports of products of questionable origin from Latin America — were thoroughly examined.

📺 Ekloges2026 — no abstract theories, but a demand for clear answers and concrete political commitments.
