Roundtable discussion:
EU energy and climate change policies: Finding a better solution for the environment and consumers
My contribution to the conclusions of the conference:
There was a good discussion in the room about the interaction between the EU’s energy and environmental policies and the different energy mixes in different states. There are many trade-offs, such as between an integrated energy market with increased competition and national security of supply. It was recognized that renewables are popular in some states such as Denmark, but are less feasible in states such as Poland where switching from coal to shale gas may be their preferred method of reducing carbon emissions. The European Commission examines the different points of view and proposes policies that would promote the common European interests and that can be agreed by all member states.
Going forward, the EU faces many challenges including upgrading its infrastructure to meet its policy objectives – in order to accommodate renewable energy and complete the internal energy market massive investments in transmission and distribution grids, including through cross border infrastructure are needed. Discussions like this are essential to getting it right.

The hashtag for the Conference for Twitter and social media is #EUReform. The discussions at the Conference will be on the record. Each of the policy-break breakout sessions will have an Open Europe or Open Europe Berlin representative as timekeeper.
This conference is open to those with expertise or an interest in the themes. Our aim is to have a broad spread of nationalities and institutions represented. Open Europe is a not-for-profit organisation, and the full cost of participation is £50 per day or £75 for both days. This covers all meals during the conference and attendance at all sessions. Special rates may be available – please enquire. All speakers confirmed unless designated with TBC.
